WALTZING MATILDA
Time signature: 4/4
Tempo: ~ 100 bpm (moderate). |
Lyrics by the Australian poet Banjo Paterson (1895).
Melody from Christina Macpherson based on the "Craigielee March" tune which was itself based on "Thou Bonnie Wood of Craigielee" by Scottish composer James Barr (1818). |
The song is about an itinerant Australian worker (swagman) travelling on foot (waltzing) with his belongings in a sheet or swag (his Matilda) slung over his back, camping beside a deep watering hole (billabong), boiling his tea kettle (billy), and capturing & killing a stray sheep (jumbuck), storing some in his food bag (tucker bag) and jumping into the billabong to escape the property owner (squatter) and the law ... from Wikipedia.

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a coolibah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong, Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee, And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred, Down came the troopers, one, two, three, Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag? You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong, You'll never catch me alive", said he, And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. Oh, You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me. |
