Observation:  Some performers hold the first note of verse (e.g. "There's") and also of
                       chorus ("Oh-") for longer than the single beat interval indicated above.

Jig time beat:  This tune has a time signature of 6/8, which is considered com-
                       pound time, and the actual jig-time beat is two per bar or measure.  This means
                       that, in this tune, each single beat interval can cover one, two, or even three notes.

Left hand:    While your right fingers move  somewhat quickly over the buttons, your left hand
                    can play a regular  | Bass - Chord | pattern in each bar or measure - challenging
                    when first learning to play the left-hand buttons.  It comes with practice.

Suggestion:   At end of song, repeat (and gradually slow) last line of chorus.

Embedded youTube VIDEOS
When first learning to play this tune, as with most jigs and reels, it may help to cut the video
speed in half until your fingers can move comfortably and smoothly from note to note.

BACKGROUND MATERIALS, INFORMATION & LINKS

Lyrics:

Do chorus after each verse.

Verse 1:

There's lots of fish in Bonavist Harbour,
Lots of fish right in around here;
Boys and girls are fishin' together,
Forty-five from Carbonear.

Chorus:

Oh, - Catch-a-hold this one,
Catch-a-hold that one,
Swing around this one, swing around she;
Dance around this one, dance around that one,
Diddle dum this one, diddle dum dee.

Verse 2:

Sally goes to church every Sunday,
Not for to sing nor for to hear;
But to see the feller from Fortune,
What was down here fishin' last year.

Verse 3:

Sally got a bouncin' new baby,
Father said that he didn't care
Because he liked the feller from Fortune,
What was down here fishin' last year.

Verse 4:

There's lots of fish in Bonavist Harbour,
Lots of fishermen in around here;
Swing your partner, Jimmy Joe Jacobs,
I'll be home in the fall of the year.

As with most "dance" tunes, there are many other verses, some relating to or poking fun at particular areas, communities, or people.  The four verses above are the most common.

Background Links:
Dr. Neil Rosenberg, of Memorial University's Folklore department, once observed that "fishing" is used here as a metaphor for courtship, and that some of the versions once sung in Newfoundland and Labrador were much "racier" (than the version given above).  [Source:  Notes on the Songs, in Volume 1 of Catch ahold this One, edited and arranged by Eric West, and published by Vinland Music.]
