Lyrics:

A gypsy rover came over the hill
Down through the valley so shady.
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

Chorus:  Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
                Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

She left her father's castle gate.
She left her own fine lover.
She left her servants and her state
To follow her gypsy rover.

Her father saddled up his fastest stead
And roamed the valley all over.
Sought his daughter at great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover.

He came at last to a mansion fine
Down by the river Claydy
And there was music and there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady.

"He is no gypsy, my Father," she cried
"but Lord of these lands all over.
And I shall stay 'til my dying day
with my whistling gypsy rover."

This is one of many versions of this song.  You may note from the youTube videos that there are other lyric versions in which the lady abandons  her husband and children to travel with the "gypsy rover".

For music theory buffs: The common melody (given above in accordion notation) is in the Mixolydian mode, with a somewhat positive feel that is similar (though not identical) to melody built on the major scale.  It begins and ends on the lower degree 5 note, and ranges through an octave bounded by degree 5 notes (accordion buttons 2 & 5, or 5 & 8. for low or high voices, respectively).
