Embedded youTube VIDEO
Twelve videos in keys of: Bm=1 (Accordion D row - inside on an A-D; outside on a D-G)
Dm=7 (Accordion F row - inside on a C-F, or a G-C-F)
Bbm=4 (Accordion Db row - not common)
Many of these performances are quite fast, so at first you may want to play the videos at half speed, and then return to normal speed when you are ready. (If you don't know how, check the "Introduction to youTube" under the drop-down "Info" menu at the top of this page).
Also, please note that some performances do not follow the above accordion notation, though most are quite close for Part A.
If you are a beginner, you may want to focus mainly on, and master, Part 1, before moving on to learn Part 2.

In Scartaglen there lived a lass,
and ev`ry Sunday after mass, she would go and take a glass, before goin` home by Bearna. We won`t go home along the road, for fear that you might act the rogue, Won`t go home along the road. We`ll go home by Bearna. We won`t go home across the fields, the big thornins could stick your heels. Won`t go home across the fields. We`ll go home by Bearna. We won`t go home around the glen, for fear your blood might rise again. Won`t go home around the glen. We`ll go home by Bearna. We won`t go down the milk boreen; the night is bright we might be seen. Won`t go down the milk boreen, but we`ll go home by Bearna. We won`t go home across the bog, for fear we might meet Kearney`s dog. Won`t go home across the bog. We`ll go home by Bearna. |
Scartaglen is a small Irish village in County Kerry, with a moderately large Roman Catholic church.
The Irish village of Scartaglen and the town of Bearna are hundreds of kilometers apart. This song might make sense to me if "Bearna" were, say, a taxi company? A "milk boreen" is a narrow country road (Irish), over which cows might also travel. |
